The sun was setting behind him as the night sky and stars came rolling in. The blend of both day and night cast a purple hue about the heavens. He looked down at the churning seas beneath the cliff, clashing against the rocky shore, casting a violent cacophony of jade and eggshell white. There was pain in his heart, tears in his eyes, though his face showed no grief. “How can I go on,” he quietly whispered to himself. He looked up, towards the horizon; the sea merged with the heavens. He recalled a poem from his youth, one about a lost sailor who was hurled into the protean sea and stars, only to be saved by a mermaid who carried him back to shore. “Why would she do that,” he whispered, “Why would she save him? Why would they lie?”
